Alejandro Jodorowsky e Camoim

There is a very interesting story behind the Marseilles Tarot, where two scholars of the subject, Alejandro Jorodowsky and Camoin, played a fundamental role. These two people managed to restore the model of the decks, thanks to having the original printing plates in their possession.

They spent more than 40 years of their lives trying to discover patterns, which would reveal the true meaning of each image and also its interpretation, at the moment of putting them on the table. Jodorowsky had met with Camoin in Paris, to work with the man who had printed the Marseilles Tarot last. The dynamic that both had, was propitiating the restoration of the cards, with new symbols and interpretations, that were going to exceed the expectations of the clairvoyants.

The origin of the Tarot de Marseille

Everything that concerns the Marseilles Tarot and its true origin is anunknown to those who have studied it. The word tarot itself, its concept is not known for sure nor to which language it responds. Jodorowsky left a book entitled “The Art of Tarot” in which he maintained his conviction that until the 18th century, the Tarot was related to games and entertainment of chance omitting its esoteric characteristics.

Also in his book he explained that the 22 major arcane cards of the Marseille Tarot were a kind of hieroglyphics, found in rubble of ancient Egypt. The barber Etteilla who officiated as a fortune teller, considered at that time that it was related to the Kabbalah and the astrological symbols. I should mention that different ethnic groups, secret and religious societies, were assigned the creation of this Tarot of Marseille as their own.

At the end of the seventeenth century there were many who were dedicated to printing the Tarot de Marseille, although it was later learned that they were mere copies of the original set.

Scholars from past centuries, such as Oswald Wirth who was a Swiss occultist, claimed that the Marseilles card game was a kind of childish version of the Gebelin Tarot. Incredible mountains of writings divulged each theory as the true one, embodied in almost two centuries of uncertain and fraudulent discoveries.

The meaning of the Marseilles Tarot Cards

According to Jodorowsky, the Marseille Tarot is made up of 21 decks called the Major Arcana, which are catalogued with Roman numerals. There is a particular card among all of them, which is represented with the 0 or 22, called The Madman.

According to the assigned order these are their names:

  • The Fool, represents the adventurer
  • The Magician, absolute power
  • The High Priestess, possibility of conceiving
  • The Empress, harmony, emotional balance
  • The Emperor, material power on earth
  • The Hierophant / also known as The Pope, spiritual power
  • The Lovers, love and couple
  • The Chariot, success, travel
  • Justice, rigour and fairness
  • The Hermit, scholar, reflection and prudence
  • Wheel of Fortune, events, dynamism and surprises
  • The Strength, luck and fortune,
  • The Hanged Man, selflessness, sacrifice and altruism
  • The Dead, transformation
  • Temperance, self-control, friendship and support
  • The Devil, imprisonment, addiction, and the bad and ugly
  • The tower, trouble, destruction
  • The Star, creativity, beauty and communication
  • The Moon, confusion, need for change
  • The Sun, happiness, reconciliation, union
  • Judgment, differentiation of the spiritual and material
  • The World, victory, fullness, success

The complete deck of cards consists of 78 decks, the remaining 56 are called Minor Arcana. They are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords and Coins.

Let us see their meaning in broad strokes:

  • Wands: They symbolize strength, masculinity, authority and aggression.
  • Cups: Refers to good energies and noble feelings, kindness, love, joy, mercy and pleasure.
  • Swords: They represent struggle, war, justice and courage, but combined with other cards they can mean harmful feelings such as hypocrisy, slander and misfortune.
  • Coins: They interpret authority, health, money and commitment.
  • Female cards: Are evaluated with numbers II, IV, VI and VII.
  • Male cards: Symbolized by the numbers III, V, VII and IX.

The Major Arcana constitute in great part the spiritual, one associated with the earthly and another referring to the states of mind. Each deck alludes to the evolution of the human being and the attitudes that represent him, according to the moment he is living.

In the interpretation of the cards, the combination of the cards plays a fundamental role; each card will have its own meaning according to the cards that are accompanying it in the throw.

Each card can be called good and bad at the same time, because they are evaluated as a whole, so the tarot player or the Tarotist cannot transmit a valid judgment until all the cards that have been chosen in the consultation appear. It is just as important to recognize the meaning of each card, as the very act of transmitting to the user the analysis of his spread on the Marseilles Tarot. The error in analyzing a detail or omitting another, can lead to a wrong prediction and alter the total meaning of the result.

It is advisable to repeat the act in case of doubt or blockage when you are ready to make the query. The Marseilles Tarot Deck will help you to solve some problem that you could not solve by your own intuition.

The decision must be made by you in any case, the tarot will support you and open roads, so you can choose the best for your life. What are you waiting for clicking on your favorite cards?
